Sixth Graders Uncover the Science of Density with Hands-On Candy Lab
Students in Mrs. Zemaitatis and Mrs. LaScala's sixth-grade science classes participated in a hands-on lab activity this week that brought physical science concepts to life using various types of candy and chocolate.
The lab provided students with a practical opportunity to review and apply the scientific formula for determining density, calculating the ratio of an object's mass to its volume. Working in small lab groups, students utilized digital scales to measure the mass of each candy sample in grams. They then determined volume through geometric measurements for regular solids or water displacement methods in graduated cylinders for irregular shapes. Once mass and volume were recorded, students calculated the density of each sweet treat to predict whether it would sink or float when placed in water.
By combining key mathematical calculations with direct scientific inquiry, Mrs. Zemaitatis and Mrs. LaScala created an engaging, interactive environment that reinforced essential physical science standards and critical thinking skills.
