The first patent was filed by Peter Ganine in 1947 and continues to be a collection item today. Artists were asked to design their rubber ducky out of clay, learning about clay techniques, color mixing, and how to manipulate clay tools.

Mrs. Amy Young Integrates DBQ Activity to Enhance Learning on the Columbian Exchange
Fifth-grade social studies teacher Mrs. Amy Young at the Caroline L. Reutter School inspires her students by integrating a Document-Based Question (DBQ) activity focused on the Columbian Exchange. Utilizing the DBQ Project’s 6-Step Method, Mrs. Young is fostering critical thinking and engagement in her classroom.
The activity begins with a Hook Exercise that captivates students’ interest and orients them to the central question. Students then read a Background Essay to gain essential context about the Columbian Exchange, followed by understanding the question and pre-bucketing to plan their document investigations
As students analyze the documents, they become “detectives,” gathering clues to support their claims. The Bucketing phase helps students organize their findings and debate their answers collaboratively. Finally, they write multi-paragraph, evidence-based essays, using their research to articulate their reasoning.
“By integrating this DBQ activity, I aim to empower my students to think critically about history and support their ideas with evidence,” said Mrs. Young. “It’s rewarding to see their confidence grow as they engage with complex questions.”
This innovative approach not only enhances students’ understanding of the Columbian Exchange but also equips them with valuable skills for future academic success.
At approximately 9:20 AM this morning, Reutter School's fire alarm activated, resulting in an evacuation of all occupants from the school building.
