Principal's Message

September 20, 2018

Good Afternoon,

As we conclude our second full week of school, our teachers have been actively completing reading and math assessments in order to determine the instructional needs of our students.  Also this week, we had the opening of our school library, which is an excellent resource for students to select their independent reading books for enrichment time and the Accelerated Reader Program.

A special note regarding the use of Standards Based Grading and the Real Time Information Portal.
Our district's Standard Based Grading (SBG) Committee met frequently over the summer months.  During their committee meetings, it was determined that, based on research,  there would be only two types of assessments recorded in Real Time—formative and summative.  According to much of the research on SBG, the only items that should be posted in the gradebook are specific assessments of learning. Formative assessments, which allow the children to see where they are in relation to a standard, and summative assessments give a measurement each child’s progress and understanding of a standard.  On report cards, students' performance in each subject area will be determined through consideration of these assessments of learning.  Non-academic performance (or "work habits") are also important components of students' success, and are reported separately from academic performance at the time of report cards

There will be upcoming parent information nights regarding Standards Based Grading to assist you in better understanding this 21st Century model of assessment.

In an effort to keep you regularly updated to school events, feel free to check out the twitter #reutterrocks for additional insights to the school that have been tweeted over the course of the week.
