During the months of September through November, students from Mrs. Mazzoni, Mrs. Niewoehner, Mrs. Hayden, Mrs. Silver and Mrs. Klepac's classes put their problem-solving skills to the test as they designed and constructed solutions to Engineering challenges as part of a new STEM unit in Technology class. Using project-based learning, students learned about the Engineering Design Process steps and had the opportunity to apply these steps while completing an engineering design challenge of their choice. Students delegated specific job roles within their teams, such as "Materials Manager", "Reporter", and "Facilitator". Using their knowledge of Science and Math, the teams worked together to generate several diagrams of scaled-down models, then compared their multiple solutions based on how well each was likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. Next, they worked with recycled/donated materials to create physical, miniature models of their designs. As the last step in the design process, they carried out tests and analyzed the failure points of their designs to identify aspects of their model that could be improved. Each team presented their final prototype to the class with a demonstration and a Google Slides reflection of what went well, what they needed to improve, and what they would continue to refine given more time. With a time constraint of only a couple weeks, the resulting prototypes were quite impressive! There were egg-drop parachutes, catapults that were able to hit a stationary target, pendulums, marble runs, zip lines that carried 10 marbles, redesigned school desks and lunch trays, an all-weather hat, a new theme park ride, rollercoasters, race cars, bridges, and more.
